When my babe and her husband asked our landscape gardening firm to design and build the garden for their new family in Vancouver , Washington , we were both flattered and challenged . The budget was more than adequate , but the property offered petty esthetic hope . Their 45 - foot by 85 - foot backyard , which consisted of little more than lawn , was box-shaped , flat , and somewhat sunken .
To combat the monotony of the minor , rectangular lawn , we suggest change the terrain from flat to undulate by creating a series of shoulder . While the rolling shoulder would add summit , we also wanted to create deepness , so we designed a naturalistic dry streambed . The creek bed was laid out diagonally , bisect the lot , create near and far space separated by the current .
