Around several of the raised seam , I have big clumps of wild marjoram , and when that stuff is bloom , the bees go batty for it , with slews and dozens of them climb around on the slight lily-white peak . I have to lean over and strive through this likely sting - fest in orderliness to care for the beds . issue of times stung : zippo . I am firm convinced it is because I never swat at them or seek to shoo them out so I can get in to weed the zucchini . I just greet them , apologize for the kerfuffle , and reach justly on through .
WhenSteve the Beekinstalled two urticaria over the summer , I was a bit intimidate . Their proximity to our deck and hot tub was , well , proximate . As in only about 20 or 30 feet . When you ’re talking about a box full of stingy things , that is really , really snug .
The first few times I had to get near the hive to plant more bee - well-disposed flowers or to holler up the riprap retaining wall , it was reasonably nerve - wracking , but I reminded myself about the oregano bees and just moved slowly , verbalize quietly , and did n’t attend them in the eye . No stings .

I searched the interwebs and found vary opinions , but all in all , it appears that despite lack of scientific evidence , most long - timebeekeepersbelieve that hives develop personalities and , in fact , realize their keepers . There are gobs of level about beekeepers approaching their beehive without protection and escaping whole , while their inauspicious friend standing several groundwork aside get prick to bit . pheromone ? Facial recognition ? Some people think the bees develop the mental attitude toward the keeper in the same direction they imprint on their home hive , generation after generation .
unearthly , right-hand ? But also amazingly coolheaded . I ’ve come to believe in the collective judgment of the hive . I still approach with caution , but I think they sense my right intent and my unswatty attitude . If they set down on me , I let ’em . We ’re draw together , my beehive and me .
