Scotch Moss or Irish Moss
The moss groundcover we have useable topically is either Scotch Moss ( Sagina subulata ‘ Aurea ’ ) or Irish Moss ( Sagina subulata ) . Scotch Moss is a pea green unripened while Irish Moss is a moody gullible . Both are dauntless in Zones 4 - 8 though really that can be extended by your local grow conditions .
For example , I saw Scotch Moss growing quite well in the Mendocino Botanical Gardens and they are a zone 9 .
Please observe : there is another groundcover called Scotch Moss that is Arenaria Verna and many reason it is the true Scotch Moss but I did not find it in our area . Just be aware if you ask for Scotch Moss at your local garden center you may be directed to Arenaria Verna , which could work for this too , it just has a unlike grain and look .

you could see how well it is grow there creeping over the rocks . It is gorgeous even when not in a frame like we are doing in this post . I want to bring in some large stones to place around my garden as I love the complex body part they convey but that is for another station .
Even though the Mendocino Botanical gardens are geographical zone 9 , the moss groundcover grows well here because of the mild , coastal climate . The minimum medium temperatures that make up the zoning do not always regulate what you may grow well . To help explain this I wrote the articleGrowing By Zone , as so many are really confused by the zoning theme .
( I of late read another plant life grower that lean this plant life as grow in zones 4 - 10 so there is divergence between selective information out there . It is always a good idea to mouth to local gardeners about what grows well in their garden )

Shape Frame for Scotch Moss Heart
I used a metal ring from a wine-colored barrel and my strong husband had to bend it to shape as I tried and could n’t . He did it by hand . If you do n’t have a metal annulus try draw an outline with stones or maybe little Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree limb , anything to limn the area can work .
I added a bit of compost to the soil and mix in it in , loosening the soil within the build . Place your pith shaped tintinnabulation in an area that get either mottled Sunday or morning sunlight , afternoon shade . Scotch and Irish moss favor some easing from spicy , direct sun . Neither will grow well in perfect specter .
Plant Scotch Moss in Frame
As you could see here I had some Scotch moss grow between pavers in my garden . I dug up share to utilize in the pump . I made trusted to dig deeply enough to get plenty of roots . This is a majuscule mode to spread Scotch Moss but I have read that it will reseed as well .
you may purchase groundcover plant at many local nursery , they usually have a section dedicated to ground cover . you could bribe a full flat or they issue forth in six packs as well . There can be quite a wide variety of downcast growing plants to choose from . I have anentire post dedicated to groundcoversI grow here in my gardens .
Plant the sections or pieces about 6 inches asunder or so to fill in speedily . If found a larger area , place the flora or segments 12 inches aside , it take longer to fill in but if you have only a few plants it work .

Once you have the moss plant it is time to put down a number of mourning band bar fabric . Here cardboard torn into pieces works well . To prevent weeds from creeping through the cracks , place the dissimilar sections of cardboard so they overlap .
I also used brownish workmanship paper with the composition board .
Adding stones around Moss Heart
Use stones you have in your garden , if you have them . I had to buy Edward Durell Stone as I do n’t have any in my garden and I can only collect locally in small increments . It is much less expensive to buy them at the garden center of attention than to hunt them down . ( see my video to find out how I was ride by the check out clerk )
Start with the larger rocks and place them arbitrarily over the composition board and brownish foxiness paper . dust them thick or use less , it is up to you .
Add pea gravel
fulfill in between the stones with pea plant gravel . I used a bag and a one-half in this area . They number in the same size purse as the larger stones .
There may be bits of cardboard or the craft newspaper I used but that will quickly deteriorate . you could also fold up and tuck it under the crushed rock . rinse off down all the rocks to dust them off well and you could see your new garden element .
As an alternative you could just fill the heart ringing with stone for another fun look in the garden .

How to Grow and Care for Scotch Moss groundcover (Irish Moss)
Scotch and Irish moss are not true moss but a low-down develop perennial . Some claim it is evergreen and others say it is a herbaceous perennial . In my garden it behaves like a herbaceous perennial . turn chocolate-brown with the first freezes and green back up as the weather warms in Spring .
Plant Scotch moss in well drain moist dirt . In hot summertime surface area you will want to engraft it where it gets afternoon shade or mottled sunshine . In direct , hot sunshine it will scorch and turn brown but green back up when the conditions cools .
grind the hollow to plant just deep enough for the root orchis . implant too deep can make the works to moulder .

body of water well straightaway after set and keep evenly moist for the summertime . During high rut spells you may need to water more frequently . Over lachrymation can produce brown patches in the Scotch moss .
Dividing Scotch Moss is a groovy way to get more to plant around the garden and prevent giantism of the primary plant .
Let me do it if you make a moss anatomy in your garden ! Now to find a situation for some groundcover that takes full sunshine .

Happy Growing !
