Scalding Heat & Sunburned Plants
Hit a sunstruck rock or concrete patio in barren foot right now and you ’re hold to holler “ Youch ! ” It ’s the same for many sunshine - loving plants , too . So , I ’ve propel my containers nigher into patio cap get across away from the direct line of fervidness . Even native Heartleaf rosemallow ( Hibiscus martianus ) looked a little washy . It ’s the same for agaves and cactus , too . A few years ago , Daphne Richards andJeff Pavlat from the Austin Cactus & Succulent SocietyansweredMarissa Garrett ’s question about her yellowing Agave americana . When it ’s 104 ° in my backyard , even after work , splashing around in a 6 - foot . kiddie pool turns the flaming down . Hummingbirds thankfully sipMexican Australian honeysuckle ( Justicia spicigera ) . I ’ve dumbfound lots of aboriginal plants for them , too , but this one ’s sizing and diffuse leave outfit the bill for a poolside perimeter in part specter . In milder winter , it ’s evergreen plant and even bloom of youth . Freeze slams take it to the ground , but in any case , I cut it back in February / March with the other perennial . Note : this area is commonly funny , but limbing up this year upped the sunlight divisor . Hummingbirds also go for my Mexican oregano ’s tubular lavender flowers that visually cool thing down , too . But “ Mexican oregano ” is not enough to describe this perennial . This isPoliomintha longiflora . One puff of air of its aromatic foliage sends me to the kitchen with clippings . Native to Mexico , it handle my part refinement spots through drouth , freeze , blow , and pelting buckets . Someday , I ’ll retrieve a spot for Lippia graveolens , another called Mexican oregano . butterfly stroke and moths join hummingbird onnative rock rose ( Pavonia lasiopetala)that takes full Lord’s Day to part shade . It ’s even seed out in spots that seldom ( or never ) get subsidiary water . But , like many of my plants , the elongated rut , no rain , and small irrigation is take in a price on anthesis . I ’ve never lost an establish plant in summers like this , but they for certain looked a lot better a few calendar week ago when I took these pictures . If tomato flora are take care diseased , go ahead and pull out them out . In June , Laura Zebehazy ask about her inconvenience tomatoes . Sheryl Williams , Horticulture Program Assistant forTravis County Extension , confirmed that this is blight and may be too far hold out to treat . If caught earlier , “ Fungicides containing pig sulfate can nuke the problem but will probably have to be reapplied during the total originate flow ( usually every 2 weeks or 10 daytime , according to recording label directions ) , ” she said . “ These trouble always show up when we have a combination of heat + rain + humidity . ”Sheryl furnish radio link for succeeding reference : Info on blight and other tomato disease ; and point aboutcopper sulphate and other herbicides and pesticides .
