propagate yam from minisetts .
I ’ve written before onedible strain potatoesand recordedan episode of Crash Gardeningon them as well .
Though some “ aviation potato ” are considered encroaching , there are also salmagundi that are not on any lists , such as the “ name ” yams you may purchase from the ethnical market place .

I bought a “ white name ” yam some months ago , then forgot about it and leave it in its plastic travelling bag in a dingy recession .
This is what happened :
Interesting , is it not ? That matter popped out roots and sprout from over a half - dozen nodes on that formerly eye - free tuber .

I had done some research on true yams before and read that they could be propagate by cut down a stem into pieces but I did n’t quite think it until I saw how the vine emerge all over the place .
After finding this yam , I also found out about propagating yam from minisetts viathis telecasting on YouTube .
I wish I could speak Hindi , but you get the approximation . I peculiarly like how they prepare a particular bed to get their yam started before transferring them to the field .

Since I already have a bunch of yam planted in the background , I calculate I might as well give it a go and cut this one and another still - dormant root to pieces and plant them .
To aid seal the cutting surfaces and keep out transmission , I burn a caboodle of sticks inmy Stovetec rocket stoveone eve , then collect the resulting ashes the next day .
( At the breaker point I took this photo , I ’d already used a bunch of the ashes covering the cut surface of a great deal of pep I was propagating ) .

All the pieces were dipped in the ashes and spread out out to dry out for a while .
Then I placed them all in a Brobdingnagian pot .
After spreading them out , they were covered with two inch of pot soil .

When they sprout and I engraft them out , I ’ll take more photos .
And if they do n’t spud , I ’ll permit you know . This encouraged me , however :
… so I had to try out it . Unlike livid potatoes , they do n’t have any visible heart when dormant so I ’ve hesitated to cut them up in the past .

No longer . It ’s yam time .
