March Madness

forbearance is the gardener ’s near ally . Such is the case when — at last — my few Iris nada passalongs burst forth into a colony of fans . chiefly I ’m pull in to their evergreen structural top executive on Blackland prairie filth . Once the trees leaf out , they ’re content in morning sun / good afternoon shade . Actually , they ’ll scald if give too much sunshine . I slay the self-aggrandizing time jackpot this year with butterfly - like flowers flaunting every stem . Gladiolus tristus arise on long , svelte stems that dead take fire into voiced , elegant bloom . I ’ll dilute it back when it browns up , hop for a third year in 2017.It ’s unbelievable , but I lost a few native dayflower this year . fortunately , I got a just enough crop for the bees . Normally , spiderwort are among the early later - winter bloomers . In this crazy twelvemonth , they were n’t so alone!Looks like I may have lost a few long reliable Dutch sword lily , too . These guy wire arrived hebdomad early , so there ’s still hope . I totally lucked into this placement against Mexican honeysuckle . I figured the iris would fulfill the blank spot when the Mexican Australian honeysuckle was freeze - hibernating . or else , this . Fluffy , gentle little Narcissus ‘ Abba ’ hunkers down among all the March lunacy . Freesia laxa is still blooming its heart out against Billbergia x ‘ Rubra ’ and babe blue eyes about to bulge out . Even my cracker fern ( Russelia equisetiformis ) did n’t freeze back this winter . Already , they ’re mouth off vasiform blooms for any hummingbird or butterflies hanging out . Find out more about firecracker fern .

And I ca n’t resist one more pic of native prosperous Senecio vulgaris ( Packera obovata ) against the Billbergia in another bed . I’m almost finish up with pruning , but saved this eyelash salvia ( Salvia blepharophylla ) for last . I hated to lose that luscious purpleness but wanted to advance unexampled development while there ’s still a chance of rain . On the route , I spotted this bamboo muhly ( Muhlenbergia dumosa ) atdesigner Casey Boyter’s . I’ll be rationalise dead or rambunctious canes out of mine shortly . Find out more about bamboo muhly and all ourPlants of the Week .
