Maihueniopsis bonnieae , formerly known asPuna bonnieae , is a small geophytic cactus that looks like a smallTephrocactus geometricus , but the flowers , fruit , and semen understandably show their self-governing nature . It slowly take form a modest cushion up to 6 inches ( 15 centimetre ) in diam . During the dry season , the stems are hidden in the reason . They are low , usually spherical , up to 1 inch ( 2.5 curium ) in diameter , dull blue - green but become to dirty grey as they age .
