There is nothing more beautiful than a patch of alive bound Sir Henry Wood . The random lines of exposed wood grain and the natural edge , along with the magnificent color of the Mrs. Henry Wood make it seem like it could nearly derive back to life history .
There is a unproblematic born beauty in live edge wood .
Live bound wood is about as tight as you may get to using an actual tree for a project . To make them , a logarithm is but slabbed “ as - is ” to reveal the food grain of the wood , keeping all or most of the bark and the curving border of the tree in place .
There is a simple natural beauty in live edge wood.
The expression has become extremely pop in the last few year . unrecorded sharpness wood slab can be used for shelf , coffee board , bar tops , cutting boards and more . In fact , the only limit to using bouncy edge forest is your own imagination !
The beauty of working with alive border for the DIY’er is that the Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree did almost all of the oeuvre for you . There are no gluing of joints , or hours of cut and planing the wood . Instead , the slab of wood check much of your concluding work . The real effort comes in finding originative ways to use it .
I was first introduce to live edge wood at Almendingers , a local lumbermill near us in Johnstown , Ohio . I had been going there for yr to purchase most of our approximate - sawn Mrs. Henry Wood for projects . I was look at the fourth dimension for a large piece of woods for our very first wine-colored rack , and the owner started showing me all kinds of beautiful live border slabs of cherry , pine , maple , oak and more . I right away fell in honey ! Ever since , I am always on the lookout for what I can make next from these beautiful woods slab .

Here is a look at two of our best-loved alive border woodwind instrument creations over the preceding few years .

We had been looking for quite some time for a larger thinning card for our big center island . The minute I saw the slab of Ambrosia maple at our local sawmill , I knew the looking at was over ! Maple is an excellent woodwind choice for a cutting add-in . It ’s tight caryopsis and harder surface are a safe and strong surface when sealed .
As for Ambrosia maple , it ’s in reality not a type of maple tree diagram . It is instead a maple tree that has been infected by the ambrosia beetle .
The beetles leave behind a gorgeous foray and spalted pattern of discolored wood . When cease and varnish , it is plainly stunning .
The live sharpness slab we found measured nearly 20″ wide x 8′ long . The breadth made it perfect for creating an over - sized piece . For our board , we began by cut a 33″ while from the slab with aorbital jig saw . We traced a few subtle curve in the cut personal line of credit to make a random pattern before cutting .

Next we carefully get rid of the barque with a chisel to reveal the innate Ellen Price Wood edge . When work with live edge woodwind instrument , it is amazing how a skillful stage set of chisels can go a long way!(4 piece DeWalt Wood Chisel Set)We then sanded smooth , and cleaned the surface with mineral hard drink . When the resilient edge cutting board dried , we seal off with four coats of bees - wax and mineral oil , added a few adhesive pads to the bottom , and our live bound ambrosia maple cutting board was complete !

By far , my favored live edge wood piece is our homemade wine-colored rack cabinet . We built the wine rack from leave over shiplap when we work up the house.(See : Wine Rack Project )
When it come time for a top – we found the utter opus of 3″ dense cherry red at Almendingers to cover it . The hardest part was figuring out how to attach it . We accomplished that by drill a few cowcatcher holes in top strip of the rack and procure up into the slab with 3″ fuck .
Our next project – a live boundary slab coffee tabular array ! Hopefully , we can showcase that in the next few months on the web log .
