After the outdoor growing season has ended, this gardener has plenty of plant life to tend to indoors

Happy Monday GPODers !

We get submissions from all over the public here onGarden Photo of the Day , but one area that I ’m always let down that we do n’t get word from more often is the Southwestern United States . I know that horticulture has its fair share of challenges in this country , but I also know mess of gardeners hold these challenge and create unbelievable blank . So I was utterly thrilled when we got a meekness from Dawn Fountain in Surprise , Arizona a yoke of month ago . She shared the telling comestible abundance she is able to arise and the flowers she provides for pollinator in her sweet mood ( hold in out that meekness here : Dawn ’s Backyard Garden in Arizona ) . Today Dawn is back with the plant spirit she cultivates inside when the out-of-door growing time of year terminate .

You got to see , a few month ago , my outside garden before I had to tear it out for the season . Now my inside .

Cut efflorescence from my memorial garden . park and flowers inside … . Sprouts started for a county average entry and my micro greens .

Dawn have a coup d’oeil of this in her last submission , but I absolutely adore the way she pairs skip flowers with her houseplants to make these faux container plantings indoors . The vibrant foliage of the spider plant ( Chlorophytum comosum , Zones 9–11 or as a houseplant / annual ) and golden pothos ( Epipremnumaureum , Zones 10–12 or as a houseplant / annual ) create a fabulous backcloth for eye - catching snapdragon ( Antirrhinummajus , Zones 9–11 or as an annual ) , ‘ Zulu Prince ’ Cape daisy ( Arctotis fastuosavar.alba‘Zulu Prince ’ , Zones 8–11 or as an annual ) , and lavender .

Even when her flower are n’t yet amply bloomed , the little pop of colour adds extra excitement in front of a muckle satisfy with various shades of Green River .

However , Dawn needs more than just shorten flowers to keep the blooms going through the months of indoor growing . A miniature rosiness can really make you feel like you ’re take a piece of the garden in spite of appearance , and holiday cacti are always a bang-up option for a hearty Cupid’s itch of winter colour indoors . The form and leaf shape of Dawn ’s holiday cacti make me call up they are a variety of Thanksgiving cacti ( Schlumbergera truncata , Zones 10–12 or as a houseplant ) . To learn more about identify the unlike types of vacation cactus and giving them the proper care , check out thisgreat article from the University of Illinois .

And on to the greens ! Two tray of sprouts quick for the county bazaar . sprout are an incredible crop to originate all year long , and you do n’t even need a tray full of soil like Dawn prefers . gibe out this clause to learn how to grow brisk sprout with not much more than some germ and a A. E. W. Mason jounce : Sprouts Make Windowsill Gardening Easy .

And another excellent twelvemonth - round vegetable is the microgreen ! Also incredibly low - maintenance , microgreens backpack a big nutrient punch in a tiny computer software . Using an quondam egg carton is time - test way to start seed , but I recollect it ’s especially well suited for things like microgreens . Most other source starting will quickly outgrow the small jail cell design to cradle an nut , and will need to be transplanted into big containers . Microgreens , on the other hand , want far less substrate to grow to their ‘ mature ’ size of it . The lid of the egg cartonful also score for a ready to hand label to keep track of the different variety you ’re farm !
