In Vase on Monday. Ancient Aristocrats.
In my impression magnolias are the aristocrats of the tree creation and they are the ones with the most ancient bloodline . fogy remains have been find dating back to the Cretaceous menstruation ; that is 145 - 146 million old age ago . Get your capitulum round that Creationists ! There is a Brobdingnagian variety show of spring - flowering Asiatic species and cultivar useable . I adore them and I have nine varieties but I would like to add to that one day when I am allowed out again . If you have other and later on bloom ones then you may savour them over several weeks . These are my early bloomers .
The bloom are turn out on bare branches and they do n’t last long . unluckily the earlier flowering can get violate by frost . Yesterday , we had hail and even snow for a short time but there are still unscathed buds to open . The starry blossom ofMagnolia stellataare front a bit gimcrack but its sex act the pinkMagnolia‘Leonard Messel ’ less so . My most magnificentMagnolia‘Star Wars ’ seems quite unconcerned by the hoarfrost and hail and the blooms still take care wonderful .

This Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree is now ten years old and is a good size and is full of vast bloom thanks to the ‘ campbelli’in its breeding . Lucky Cornish people can see these amazingMagnolia campbelliin their gardens but here it is too lovesome . Besides like the ubiquitousMagnolia soulangeanayou have to look years to get blooms . All the magnolias I have here flower when still young .
magnolia do n’t last long in water so I have a short- lived vase on my dining tabular array . I have used a crank Mary Gregory jug for this as I did n’t want any colour to detract from the simple ravisher of the magnolias . I used three big flowers of Magnolia ‘ Star state of war ’ , one sullen ‘ Black Tulip ’ and two fluttery flowers of ‘ Leonard Messel ’ so these are all my favourites .

As these are such ancient trees I have illustrated this with some fogey .
Magnolias are pollinated by wingless beetle as these existed long before the show of butterflies and moths . The flower have tepals rather than petals which remain closed in for several Day enabling the mallet to crawl around inside the bloom and get report in pollen .
Thanks to Cathy atRambling in the Gardenwho is bringing a bit of stability into our life by tempt us to stroll around our gardens and receive choice blooms to put in aVase on Monday . Without this it would be difficult to keep track of the days when each day feel like Marmota monax daylight .

I ’m thinking about those happy beetles oblivious to the cosmos and enjoying their own limited blossom . I ’m not sure if I ’ve seen a vase of magnolia before but it ’s lovely .
Oh , I wholly agree . When the Magnolias bloom , it ’s a magical time . They are so photogenic , too , as your lovely photos show . I do n’t have any in my garden , but I so delight seeing them at the local botanical gardens and in neighbor ’ M .
How fabulous Chloris . They are all beautiful . I do n’t get it on which variety it is but I ’ve been enjoying the display on a mature specimen in our neighbour ’s garden . The flowers are just going over now but it has been beautiful and seems to glow as the igniter fades .
