Though I ’d rather wait until the bananas and papaya mature to bring them in , they willnotlive through frosts so we had to get harvesting before rime wrecked all we had .
Before it got down into the 20s on Tuesday night , it was time to grab what I could and get it into the theatre .
The chayotes have continued to put out fruit from fall until now . I opine we got about 30 - 40 this yr from just one flora . Quite impressive . unluckily , my children do n’t really wish them all that much so the immense harvests are n’t all that helpful . Oh well – at least they love eating yams .

Green papaya are n’t my favourite by themselves , but they are decent cooked and they ’re quite good inThai green papaya tree salad .
I ’ve also postedsome immature papaia recipe here . The enzymes are also great for your digestion , and I ’ve send on green papaya as a survival foodover at The Prepper Project .
It ’s just … compared to a mature melon tree … green papayas are distressing . We do n’t get very many mature papaya around here , sadly , since just about the time the trees are lade with fruit , the weather gets cold . If you live further south in the state , your pawpaw will produce like screwball and give you plenty of fruit in a tiny footprint . It ’s a perfect backyard yield “ tree ” in that it ’s easy to grow from seed and usually produces in a year or less . When I get a more tropic homestead , they ’re at the top of my planting list .

The banana tree I force in are n’t quite ready for harvest time but we had no alternative . They were n’t go to ripen up before the frost destroy them , plus the tree fall over . glean ’em or lose ’em !
When I went harvesting on Tuesday , my wife film me . Check out how BIG that papaya tree got – from cum , in less than a year !
At the remnant of the day we pulled in probably 40 - 50lbs of green goods … and it ’s a good thing , too . Wednesday morning broke at a wintry 28 point and when I look outside at around 11AM , I saw burned and wilted leaves everywhere .
I hope you all came through the frost ok . It ’s hard to believe that in just two months everything will be blooming and explode into raw lifespan again here in North Florida .
