A sprawling park and gorgeous gardens in the Keystone Province
Happy Friday , GPODers !
Last Friday I shared some wildflowers I spy on my travels through Ontario last summer , but the stumble did not stop there . As I continued my way across Canada I finally reached the next province , Manitoba . The blacken summer temperatures in other August entail I could n’t stay for long and had to rush through to get to in high spirits lift and cooler temperature in the Benjamin West . However , I made clip to visit one watershed in Winnipeg that was a must - see : Assiniboine Park .
A straggle 1,100 - Akko car park , Assiniboine features a zoological garden , outdoor field of operations , indoor garden , and more . I came to catch the many unlike gardens . Though it was a sweltering , sunny Clarence Day with small shade fill-in , it was absolutely worth the stop . Below are some of the highlights , but keep your eyes out for a part two because this green had so many gorgeous garden distance there is much more I want to share .

Assiniboine Park might be the first public gardens I visited that featured a truly impressive kitchen garden . I ’ve see small section in other ballpark dedicated to edibles , but often herbs and perfectly nothing of this order of magnitude . Of course , the veg garden ’s favorite flower , the marigold , was on full display here .
Another fabulous companion plant spotted in these arresting pots , nasturtiums . Actually a tasty comestible peak itself , this flower is often grown for its power to appeal microbe like aphid , which keep the bothersome pests aside from your valued crop . Though the most common varieties do n’t have the tacky flowers , I think their circular leaves are very interesting and a great dividing line to the bold ruby-red banana Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree ( Enseteventricosum , annual ) and spiky ornamental millet ( Pennisetumglaucum , annual ) .
Even before I was done winding my room through the kitchen garden , these out - of - this - worldly concern mounds of ‘ Karl Foerster ’ feather reed grass ( Calamagrostis×acutiflora‘Karl Foerster ’ , Zones 5–9 ) were catch my eye from a distance . When I got faithful , I was enamored . This was the start of the “ Sensory Garden ” and I could n’t think of a more apt name .

These prominent masses of plants invite you consciously retard down and immerse yourself in the garden from all different angles and linear perspective . The gravel and stone paths literally go you through , up , and around these plants so rich with soft social movement and sound ( though there was n’t even a whisper of a breeze on the Clarence Shepard Day Jr. I visited 😅 ) .
This included a great elevated viewing platform that allowed you to take in the garden from above .
Ornamental sess were the substantial star of this garden ( very appropriate for a garden at the startle of theCanadian Prairies ) , on the mound masses and throughout the beds . Here , ‘ blond Ambition ’ blue grama ( Boutelouagracilis‘Blonde Ambition ’ , Zones 4–9 ) looks like a hysteria of flying bugs next to the arc plumes of fountain eatage ( Pennisetumalopecuroidesand cvs . , Zones 6–9 ) .

Even more flossy cosmetic grass creates a spectacular finely - textured frame around this popping of bright pinkbee balm(Monardadidyma , Zones 6–9 ) .
Big , bold efflorescence and large , riotous leave get lots of attending , but do n’t underestimate all the lean and marvellously wispy plants . plant in mass , like this howling belt ofRussian sage(Perovskia atriplicifolia , Zones 4–9 ) , these plants look like colored clouds floating in your garden beds .
And the plants just keep getting all right and ok until they were nearlysee through ! Here , ‘ Karl Foerster ’ feather reed grass makes a gorgeous golden backdrop for the near - stemmed meadow rue ( Thalictrumrochebruneanum , Zones 5 - 9 ) .

I can go on for minute verbalise about this garden , but I ’ll hold on there for today . Next week I ’ll carry on this tour and show you what was on display in the Indigenous Peoples Garden , English garden and Leo Mol Sculpture Garden . Have a marvelous weekend , GPODers !
