It is the first weekend of May and we ( the British ) are about to enter what is known among gardeners as the Show Season .
Between now and August there are four vast Flower Shows organised by the RHS ( the Royal Horticultural Society ) and innumerable small flora fairs all over the commonwealth . Some are specialist , some are in the priming coat of grand stately homes , some are sell plants develop by neighbor and sold very cheaply in help of Jacob’s ladder and some are just an excuse for a company and a large piece of cake .
It is a notable fact that keen nurseryman , when not actually in the gardens buy the farm for it , like nothing more than visiting other gardens and shows . They meet up with like - minded people , see great plants and go home felicitous and heavily oppressed with new thing for their garden . I am pretty certain that this is not a oddly British riding habit and the same is dead on target of gardeners all over the world .

The first big show of the yr starts next weekend at Malvern in Worcestershire * . I have been going to Malvern for about eight years now . I was first ask there to give a lecture in an empty moo-cow shed . This was not the best seat as it was cavernous , echoey and there was too much illumination for the characterization to show up well . In its favour there was no sign of the previous occupier and all was sparkly white . Since then we have built a proper theatre in a marquise amongst the garden where I cavort and talk and introduce eminent speakers . It is a really endearing few days .
The showground itself is a enormously beautiful location in the lee of the Malvern Hills ( which mark the boundary with Wales ) and with a view of the Cotswolds . On a secure mean solar day the view are awe-inspiring and sky seems immense . The problem is that you could never recount what the conditions will do ( welcome to Britain ! ) and , over the years , during the show I have seen snow and hail , pool of body of water up to my shins , fog and ( one splendid year ) it was the lovesome place in the country . “ Be disposed ” is the motto of not only the Boy Scouts but the British show visitant .
Over the weekend over 90,000 visitors will slog through the gates to bask ( among other thing ) a display of twenty show garden which have been build over the past fortnight , hundreds of stalls sell sculptures , art , clothes and jewellry as well as garden sundries . A vast marquee containing a hundred of the effective baby’s room in the country and a neat choice of different local food provider load up down with delicious cheeses , Proto-Indo European , cakes and cyder .

We had a large time a few years ago when some British bloggers arranged a corking convocation of garden blogger from around the world . We had bloggers from all over this country and even some from the U.S. Sadly the conditions was pretty loathsome but a mirthful prison term was had by all .
It is quite an function but very friendly and cozy – a bit of a contrast with the next show in the calendar , The Chelsea Flower Show about which I will save more next metre .
There , a cause ( if ever you needed one ) to retrovert .

- It is not , stringently speaking , the first show of the yr as there was one in Cardiff a span of weeks ago . It is in the grounds of Cardiff Castle , which is a pretty cool position , but is modest ( though charming ) in comparing to the others . It is a bit like a quick up jog before the master events .
