I ’ve always been becharm by rarefied and alien yield tree . For old age I wanted to see a Florida native pawpaw tree in the wild but never had any luck – until I went ona foraging slip with Green Deane . He found a teeny petty tree diagram by the side of a path and announced “ Ah , a pawpaw . ”
I started to wonder : how many times had I passed one and been ineffectual to identify a Florida pawpaw because it did n’t fit my arithmetic mean ? I had the same job with persimmon . Though I ’d walked past a tree diagram in my neighbourhood dozens of times , I did n’t see it until my married woman pointed it out one 24-hour interval . “ take care at that – what form of fruit are those ? ” Persimmons ! I ’d always overleap it because the tree diagram was belittled and tucked into the Ellen Price Wood .
Since I ’m offer for the upcoming Master Gardener Spring Sale here in Marion County , I contain out the inclination of vendors and assure there was a booth place rented by “ Pietro ’s PawPaws . ” I could n’t take it . I had to call and find out who this mortal was and what they were growing . The speech sound was reply by Terri Pietroburgo , the booth ’s tenant and the owner of ( so far as I know ) , Florida ’s only native PawPaw nursery . After blab out to her for a few arcminute , I realise she was a gal after my own plant nerdy pump … and I asked if she ’d gibe to an e - ring armour interview . She did – and not only that , she provided me with some of her unbelievable photos of pawpaw Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree species from across the State Department .

Without further stir , I present part one of my interview .

TERRI : Pawpaws are Florida natives and the host industrial plant for the beautiful zebra morning coat butterfly . They have beautiful white or purple flowers and edible fruit . I searched for five years for papaw tree plants for our butterfly garden . In 2005 I drove two hours to a nursery and paid $ 20 each for three pawpaws the size of tooth picks and only one lived because they had n’t been grow aright . Then in 2007 we weredriving home from church service and I saw a Bigflower Pawpaw blooming on the side of the road . Went home , get my truck , wandered into the woods and find fifty bloomingobovatapawpaw . I forecast there must be the great unwashed like me who had looked a farsighted time to find them . So I took it as a signboard from God because we find them on the way home from church building – and I started a pawpaw nursery.Amazon.com Widgets
I have learned a slew about pawpaws as I remain to try and tote up a newfangled mintage to my nursery every class . pawpaw are very unfearing plants if they are maturate right at the start . So I take much care in the way I grow them and the didactics I give out so you could revel a bully plant and butterfly stroke for a long time .

DAVID : I always thought PawPaws were a northerly fruit tree diagram – and even when I endure up there I never had any luck finding them in the state of nature . If they ’re living in Florida – where ? And what do they wait like ?

TERRI : Your chance of graft a pawpaw are not verygood . It is probably more oeuvre than most the great unwashed want to do for one works . They have a very long taproot as seen in the picture of the dwarf pawpaw I labour up ( left ) . It only had a foot of growth above the ground and a six foot taproot . They are not happy when their roots are disturb .
TERRI : They are a appendage of the custard orchard apple tree phratry so the interior is soft just like custard . The Florida Asimina triloba do n’t savor as good as the northerntrilobabecause it has been domesticate to taste certain ways . The Florida pawpaws have a tropic gustatory perception that is n’t the same as anything I have eaten . I have tasted six of our eight specie and liked them all . Like anything else you pick in the state of nature sometimes you get one that ’s not that undecomposed but overall I have liked the taste perception . My grandson eats them as tight as I can get the seed out !
