Gone are the shining blue sky of autumn , when one look up through a dazzling pallet of colored leaves against the sky . Lime green , lustrous yellow , golden , orangish , ruby-red , mahogany tree , and brown farewell drifting down around us as we posture outside and contemplate the changing of the seasons . We no longer try and sense the favorable scramble of the leave-taking as we walk through them .

The rain has changed all of those delights of the nightfall season . Five days ago , it turned white-haired and cold and the rains began . I take to the woods out to pick the last of the ripe chile capsicum and bring in the rest of the winter squash that were still in the garden . It ’s a undecomposed matter that I did since the rain has n’t let up – it has been rain day and night – and the terra firma is saturated . Sure do n’t require to walk in the garden when it is this wet ! A nurseryman always receive pelting , even though it does n’t always fit within our architectural plan . The precipitation replenishes our water mesa and nourishes all living things . It can be inconvenient when we are waiting to sow seeds , or even more so , when it is crop time and we are n’t capable to get in our crop .

This rain is a moth-eaten rain and I have been scrambling about outside in my peat bog boots and raingear gathering all of my potted plants . Dealing with the Last of the ChilesIn the meantime , I have had a surplusage of chile to portion out with . My daughter Lucie and her fellow , Bret , who is a chef ( fortunately for me ! ) spend an afternoon with rubber gloves on , prepare chiles for canning . After removing any blemished or bad spots , we stem and seed them — except for the whole chiles — which we pierce with a knife to allow the pickle liquidity to whole surround them .
