Clever Ideas
gardener are such innovative engineers , each in their own way . I hump even abbreviated glimpses into their imagination , as I did late in Toronto at theGarden Bloggers Fling . One garden on a narrow street — where neighbour are fingertip near — embrace tranquillity along with enclosure . From my nursery advantage detail , I spied Su Reid St - John fromBonnie ’s Plants . And is n’t this just the cut greenhouse ? Note the ramp up - in cold frames — so ingenious ! I know I ’ve seen a cold frame in somebody somewhere or other , but you do n’t really need them in Central Texas . South Carolina ’s Julie Hillwrote a singular taradiddle about the repetitive design shapes in this garden to create single in your own . I did n’t catch it , so I really admire her good couturier oculus . When Julie lived in Austin , we taped her a few time when she owned Wild - Connections butterfly stroke farm . She continue to civilise us all in her new digs !
At theToronto Botanical Garden , here ’s an idea to separate space with a stoolpigeon peep into each other . Their tripod bee hotel was booked solid! Now , a question I often get is how to dissuade cats and ( other ) wild critters from digging up a garden . Here , a woman who treasures a proficient scavenge used these bit ( pavers , perchance ? ) to protect her crops . And like CTG ’s Trisha Shirey , she buries plastic flora pot to slowly water and fecundate . To trellis climbing crops , she anchors them to an old railing she regain . On the far pass on , remark the refuse of green cervid net to protect seeds from fiddling claw . We all end up with a few numb trees now and then , sad to say . Rather than chipping up this one , she gave it a 2d life story to go under off the rich , textural tones of her wildlife home ground inclosure . She took advantage of this crook to view a precious stone . Even in a small rain barrel , she scavenges spare water . What I like here is how she sparked up an oft - neglected side yard . I encounter her for only a few minutes , but I ’d like to be her neighbor! In front , her dry brook bed employs rain to sieve gently into habitat perennials , rather than irrigate the street , a pattern that sure as shooting slay home in Texas rainfall bomb calorimeter . On a larger preservation scale , Evergreen Brick Workscombines urban environmental instruction with historic view in this former brick - making factory . This family destination includes something for everyone — Farmers ’ Market , fry activity region , pool , nature trails , and tours of the quondam brick factory . Demonstration garden illustrate wise garden idea to try at menage , like rainwater gardens . I do n’t lie with what sort of sword lily this is , but my Louisiana iris expect similar and are perfect for rainfall / drought rainwater gardens . A round of native grasses promotes their deep - rooted water keeping and soil aeration along with nutrient for birds and other seed - eaters . And absolutely , the best idea ever : we ’re never too old to draw on a pavement with chalk . I ’m getting chalks this weekend !
Thank you to Ontario organizers , Helen Battersby , Sarah Battersby , Lorraine FlaniganandVeronica Silvafor widening my garden horizons and friendships !
