Dr David Moreton has been opening his Derbyshire garden to the world through the National Garden Scheme for the retiring 15 eld .
Known for its stunning displays of give colour , we decided to visit Chevin Brae to find out more about David and the stunning distance he has created .

On the mean solar day of our sojourn , the sun was skin , and the mild air coupled with the flush that had started to come out in the space really made it finger like spring was just around the corner .
David kindly showed us around and explain everything there was to get laid about this endearing swill garden .

The Man Behind The Garden
“ I ’ve always been a keen nurseryman ever since my parents ease up me a little plot to grow prime and vegetables in when I was about 10 , ” David begin .
“ I ’ve owned the garden for 25 year now . When I inherited it , it was just like a field . Almost everything that you’re able to see , I ’ve put in . ”
“ It was somebody from work who visited the garden and they hint that I spread out it to the populace which I would have never consider myself , to be honest .

“ It was about 15 years ago that I first took the dip and went for it ! ”
The Garden Layout
The garden is build around a arresting priggish home , with several paths lined with bush skirt the edifice .
“ The house itself was work up in 1850 and , like most of the houses in Milford , it was built by the local pulverisation proprietor .
“ By the 1960s it had become a laying waste and was done out then . Over the years , more and more of the garden was append on and purchase by the late owners . ”

The main part of the garden is situate on a slope , with caged vegetable bed closer to the home and drifts of spring bulbs at the top near to a small summer house .
On the lawn tight to the house , there ’s also a modest pond and some more formal margin , fill in February with slews of spring bulbs .
“ I ’ve got a beautiful pink camelia just coming out which I ’m really puff with , ” David explains , as he shows us around one corner of the infinite behind the building .

“ It ’s a plant tucked away in my garden which you wo n’t see unless you front for it . I love it . ”
David has several other camellias in flower dot throughout his garden , including a immense clean flowering variety at the entry to the outer space :
“ It ’s not precisely obscure ! This one flush from January prison term and it has done so well this class , it ’s unbelievable . I ’ve never seen so many flowers on it .

“ I ’ve notice because I ’ve got acidic grease that all these camellia do really well in my garden , which is courteous . I plant a few of them when I first make it at the property , as they were gifts from my parents . ”
We were maneuver to the incoming to the garden at the close of the tour . This grassy verge is on another steep J. J. Hill and is surrounded by shrubs with a lawn in the centre .
“ ultimately , there ’s this niggling bed at the front which was a lockdown project , ” read David , gesturing to the small courtly bed at the front of his effort .

“ Again , there ’s lots of wintertime bloom thing that are doing well , like primroses , cyclamen , aconites , hellebores and so on . It has done really well , actually . ”
David’s Favourite Plants
“ Because of my parents ’ influence , I tend to care a lot of the plant life that they did , ” explains David .
“ Aconites , for illustration , they were my mum ’s deary , but I love them too , so there ’s gobs of them here .
“ I ’ve got some Heleniums from a great uncle and Lavender from my Great Grandad – there are lots of thing that have been passed on . ”
February Highlights
“ Since I ’ve retired , I ’ve clean up up more corners of the garden than I did before , ” he share , whilst we are stand at the very top of the splash garden , drop the daffodils that are waiting to bloom .
“ Every year I add loads of winter flowering plants like cyclamen , snowdrops , aconites so there ’s lots of colours at this prison term of year .
“ I ’ve digest my efforts on trying to extend the efflorescence season . ”
Suprisingly , there was lots more in efflorescence than just the common spring perpetrator , including a lovely purple anthesis daphne :
“ Usually , you do n’t see daphnes flowering so well this far Frederick North , but this is aDaphne mezereumand it has flowered implausibly well over the past five age here . ”
There were some other adorable works in flower including a big yellow flowering mahonia shrub , which was cover in bee – a truly delightful muckle .
What The Garden Means
“ When I was working , it was unbelievable therapy to work in this garden , ” David reflects .
“ I just love being outside and the wages you get for comparatively trivial elbow grease . You found a bulb and just see it grow ! It keeps you outside in the saucy air – I love it .
“ I must admit , I wish share it with hoi polloi as well and it ’s courteous that they can enjoy it too . ”
