Cherry’s Small Space Garden and Greenhouse Experience, Part 2

Saying goodbye to a beautiful garden bed in order to make room for new planting adventures

Happy Friday GPODers !

We ’re back in Richmond , British Columbia today to keep Cherry Ong ’s series on her modest garden overhaul and glasshouse initiation . InPart 1(click the link if you missed it last hebdomad ) , we got an foundation on the project as well as a piffling backstory on the garden that needed to be murder for the greenhouse to be built . We ’re picking up where we left off , with the removal of that beautiful repeated garden , and the preparation and construction of the nursery base .

Tree and Plant Removal

Along the same time that our fencing was being replaced , we hired professional to remove lilac trees and other perennials in the bed . It ’s never sluttish to say goodbye to one plant life , much less a whole garden bottom . However , sometimes sacrifice must be made for novel growth and opportunities .

When combat voiceless - to - take plant like trees and matured shrub , sometimes shout in the professionals is the best option ( if it ’s usable to you ) . This is peculiarly helpful in a pocket-sized space like Cherry ’s , to ensure you do n’t anguish yourself or environ plants .

I can imagine it is also a little less upsetting than having to draw in those beautiful plant from the ground yourself !

And just like that , in half of a sidereal day , the bed is cleared and a blank slate continue . While it ’s sad to say goodbye , the excitement for what is to occur must really hit at this point .

Greenhouse Base

Russell Nursery ( @russellnursery ) cater elaborated and helpful advise on website preparation and foundation grammatical construction of the glasshouse base : hallsgreenhousesbc.com / foundations/. I was previously concerned about the size of the greenhouse and the radix extending to the walkway but I was told this is not an issue bodily structure wise .

One matter we failed to anticipate budget wise was the high cost of the glasshouse base training for such a small space . We had quotation mark that reached up to $ 80 a straight foot for soil removal and crushed rock placement . Most of the contractors want to impart in a small bay lynx which jacked up the price of the removal . Our fence contractile organ was eager to complete the line and he found a subcontractor who performed the religious service without machinery . They complete the task in 2 - 3 minute . ( Prior to that we removed almost half of the dirt . ) We select care of soil disposal .

We used 1/2 in clear crushed rock candy ( drain rock candy ) for the foundation pad . We prefer 3/4 inch but it was n’t available .

Foundation is constructed of 4 x 4 pressure process lumber hold together with galvanized 6 ” by 1/2 ” slowdown bolt with washer . The pressure treated lumber is nestled into the bed of smash rock-and-roll but the superlative must be higher than the finished grade . It was fulfill with more clean crushed rock candy . Very very important that the basis is layer and square !

Since our garden is quite minuscule , we were not able to allow for 18 inch of blank on the east side of the greenhouse . Typically the pad of the greenhouse should be 18 inches or big on all side than the glasshouse so that you may easily walk around the greenhouse to clean and maintain it .

Greenhouse Selection

For the greenhouse , after stag around , I fell in love with a UK - madeHalls Greenhouse at Russell Nurseryin North Saanich , BC . The model we choose is aSupreme8 ’ x 6 ’ which features a dark green painted aluminum physical body , a exclusive slue door , roof vent , clear glass glaze with the curved side of meat paneled with 4.5 millimeter polycarbonate . The COVID pandemic affected the glass supply chain for our greenhouse so we waited 2 years . Nathan from Russell Nursery was wonderful in educating and supporting us before , during and after our build .
