Here in the Northeast , Halloween was upstaged by a rare late October snowstorm that dumped several inches of wet C. P. Snow on trees still in leaf , bringing down power lines , branches , and entire tree diagram . In many local community of interests Halloween was scratch , due to power outage and the risk of dangling power line and limb . That probably accounts for the lower - than - usual participation in the contest .

Among the entries we did experience , Cherry ’s stand out for its elegantly carved motif of gingko parting and Chuck Berry . For her efforts , Cherry will pick up a three - year subscription toFine Gardening ,
