Cardinal Richelieu built the Palais Royal in the heart of Paris almost 400 years ago . Louis XIV exist there as a young serviceman , and the Dukes of Orléans called it home . The museum , a discreet limestone - apparel building terraced into circumvent Benny Hill , abuts line of business once paint by Giverny ’s most noted resident , Claude Monet — so Rudkin left one side of the garden unhedged and turned an adjoining area into a field strew with poppies . The erstwhile garden on the museum place were littered with uprise metal frame ; Rudkin converted them into arbors for white wisteria ( “ a polite nod to Monet , who ’s next door ” ) and constructed another serial publication of garden rooms , this time packed with Nipponese anemones , cosmos , heliotrope , and morning time - glories . Like all his garden , it is wondrously democratic — accessible , easily enjoyable , filled with fragrant , unpretentious plant .
Rudkin ’s advice to other gardener is plain and simple : “ Make a inclination of what grows well in garden around you and make your garden out of that .
