Cardinal Richelieu built the Palais Royal in the heart of Paris almost 400 years ago . Louis XIV exist there as a young serviceman , and the Dukes of Orléans called it home . Today it house bureau of France ’s Ministry of Culture . It is more than just a monumental building , then : It is a piece of French history . Yet in 1992 , when the French politics settle to restore the palace ’s once - notable gardens — which had been a lively Parisian meeting place in the 18th and other nineteenth centuries but had been mostly abandoned in modern time — Culture Minister Jack Lang hand the commissioning not to a French room decorator or landscape architect but to Mark Rudkin , a transplanted New Englander with no formal horticultural preparation .

Rudkin ’s approach was simple : “ I thought , The form ’s good , the proportion are salutary , but there ’s no place for people to take the air into the gardens and sit down . ” revivify the basic plan of 1730 , with its two-fold melodic line of arc linden Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree and its central spring , Rudkin append four plant - framed paved enclosures surrounded by put up beds of fragrant annuals — mostly heliotrope and white flowering nicotiana . He also installed park benches , turned to face each other like seats in a railroad track compartment — foster a sense of collusion among visitors . “ Before I came in , ” say Rudkin , “ no one set foot in the piazza . Now citizenry who survive nearby are beginning to quetch about the crew . ”

If he has no formal training in his chosen field , Rudkin is not exactly ego - taught . He grow up on a 125 - acre demesne in Fairfield , Connecticut , where , as he order it , “ we were all very flora - conscious . My Father-God had a vast cognition of tree and shrubs , and my mother did the flower garden , so I was just brought up in that component . ” ( His mother , Margaret Fogarty Rudkin , also go on to feel a occupation sell habitation - bake whole - straw clams and built it into a potbelly named after the home ’s estate — Pepperidge Farm . ) His route to professional garden design was hardly a straight one , though . Now in his 70s , Rudkin has led an unusual life story . As a young man he wanted to be a vocalizer — before conclude that he did n’t have , “ the right form of sound . ” In the early 1950s he hang out with creative person like Jackson Pollack and Mark Rothko in New York City and develop into an accomplished painter himself . Then he became capture by Martha Graham , examine dance with her , and toured Europe with her company in 1954 . When the company arrived in Paris , Rudkin fall in making love with the metropolis and stayed behind when Graham returned to New York .

He pass the next dozen years or so “ hang out ” some more , he says , with the great unwashed like Cathérine Deneuve , Paloma Picasso , and George Cukor . Then , in 1967 , he grease one’s palms   6 overgrown Acre in Le Mesnil St - Denis , about 20 sea mile to the south of Paris , and began build a house and a painting studio apartment and recollect about a garden . Today , though he subsist in an apartment in Paris ’s sixteenth arrondissement , he drive out to his country home every day .

The business firm — a low - slung advanced building with a kitchen full of copper pans and a living way line with Miró print — overlook what seem to be an wild woodland , stress by camellias and tall pinkish foxgloves . Nature has had some service , however : A exorbitant gravel path loops down between flowering bush and a mix of spontaneous and planted earth cover — primulas , violets , ivy , and Cyclamen purpurascens . Other , almost unperceivable dirt way of life wind past spectacular rhododendrons , magnolias , cotoneaster , and cherry tree diagram . “ I do n’t get too worried about gardens , ” Rudkin says , “ because I know they ’re always accidental . There were a few camelia and rhododendron on this side when I buy the prop , for example . When I saw how well they were doing , I recall , I ’ll just add more , footling by little . That ’s what brought me down the hillside . ” When he first look the field at the bottom , Rudkin remember , “ it was just junk — bramble , quondam mattresses , bedspring . I cleaned it out and plant yard of Narcissus pseudonarcissus . ”

The path proceed across the playing area toward an opening move in a tall hornbeam hedge . It ’s a shock to step through the hedge and into a space that is , in event , a lobby . A leafy corridor leads past a small jet into a series of garden rooms divide by wall of hornbeam and beechwood . One is a garden full of flower beds patterned with small , geometrically clipped boxwood . There are excessive blue and white garden , and a rock ‘n’ roll garden softened with fantastic strawberries andFritillaria meleagris . “ I put in big inflorescence industrial plant that foam and explode and pass to the ground , ” says Rudkin . “ I wish to use great blocks of color and not get them all mixed up together like scrambled egg . ” Another garden is a paved orbit to display container in summertime , while still another holds only a 16th - hundred stone wellhead surrounded by crushed rock . Rudkin ’s inhalation here , he says , was the garden at Sissinghurst in Kent , the home of Sir Harold Nicolson and Vita Sackville - West . “ Everything is crooked , nothing full-strength , ” he says admiringly , “ and yet Nicolson was able to pull everything together . ”

One protagonist of Rudkin ’s who admire his garden was Mary Sargent Ladd , the Baroness d’Anglejean , a board fellow member of the Franco - American museum at Château de Blérancourt in Picardy — and in 1989 she founder him his first public commission , to design a garden at the château . He did this by transform what had been a veg patch into two intimate walled garden with groovy sweep of color and , appropriately enough , mostly American plants — among them cosmos , dahlias , marigolds , aster , heliotrope , and the plant that has become Rudkin ’s key signature , Verbena bonariensis . ( “ You never saw it in Paris until I used it at the Palais Royal , ” note Rudkin , “ and now it ’s everywhere . ” )

Three long time later , when American art collector Daniel Terra founded the Musée d’Art Américain in Giverny , Rudkin was asked to create a garden there , too . The museum , a discreet limestone - apparel building terraced into circumvent Benny Hill , abuts line of business once paint by Giverny ’s most noted resident , Claude Monet — so Rudkin left one side of the garden unhedged and turned an adjoining area into a field strew with poppies . The erstwhile garden on the museum place were littered with uprise metal frame ; Rudkin converted them into arbors for white wisteria ( “ a polite nod to Monet , who ’s next door ” ) and constructed another serial publication of garden rooms , this time packed with Nipponese anemones , cosmos , heliotrope , and morning time - glories . Like all his garden , it is wondrously democratic — accessible , easily enjoyable , filled with fragrant , unpretentious plant .

Rudkin ’s advice to other gardener is plain and simple : “ Make a inclination of what grows well in garden around you and make your garden out of that . If one plant does very well , industrial plant more of that , and if another does n’t do well , take it out . ” There is a sealed New England bluntness to his advice — but Rudkin resists any attempt to see his garden as a blend of French sophistication and American practicality . “ They come from the experiences I ’ve had search at gardens of all kinds in many res publica , ” he says . “ I certainly would n’t give them a nationality . ” It ’s surely just a conjunction , then , that the tallest prime in the blue garden at Rudkin ’s house in Le Mesnil St - Denis is a delphinium develop by another American artist ( albeit by adoption ) who loved Europe , Edward Steichen . Its name ? Connecticut Yankee .
