Enjoying a classic houseplant in a new way
Today Cynthia Strickland , who gardens in Raleigh , North Carolina , is partake an interesting turn on the intimate amaryllis . ( Cynthia has lead to the GPOD before ; check it outhereandhere . )
In the preceding weeks I enjoyed see a “ wax ” amaryllis(Hippeastrumhybrid , Zones 7 or 9 through 10 reckon on the diversity , or uprise as a houseplant ) , a flowering incandescent lamp case in wax , raise and bloom indoors . The flower lasted at least as long as a cut blossom organisation . It did not take to be planted in grease or water , and it was gentle to move around . The amaryllis only needed bright light , and there was no territory or water to spill .
The roots had been move out , so the bottom of the incandescent lamp was bland and devoid - standing . In some pic you could see how most of the energy run into flower product and how the length of the leaves are very light . The bulb , which is bigger than a baseball game , took about four week to produce visible efflorescence buds from under the sepal . In this ( unknown ) potpourri , there were two flower stems with four flowers on each stem .

It was interesting to watch the industrial plant office grow and change , as well as to see how different the red of the flower petal looked in various kindling situations . The bud group together look similar to tulips and really bulge next to an ‘ Electric Lime ’ coleus(Solenostemon‘Electric Lime ’ , annual ) . Outdoors in shining sun , the red - orange tree coloring material is stark and intense paired with a ‘ Blue Pacific ’ juniper(Juniperus conferta‘Blue Pacific ’ , Zones 6–9 ) .
I live in Zone 7a , where I have seen amaryllis get outdoors . Although the chance are slim that the spend , rootless bulb will continue dwell , I removed the wax and other app , disperse some take root hormone on the bottom of the electric-light bulb , and placed it in a bay window with some soil as an experimentation to see if it would grow .
glad horticulture !

The amaryllis in full bloom of youth .
The wax - covered electric light , with the flower buds just beginning to come forth .
The stem beginning to unfold taller .

The buds quick to bolt down open .
In full prime . The farewell of the waxed bulb stay brusque , but the flowers open as normal .
Detail of the anther — the manly constituent of the flower — beginning to disgorge their pollen .

The amaryllis paired with a ‘ Blue Pacific ’ juniper .
The heyday have finished , the flower stems have been reduce off , and the wax has been peeled aside to try and encourage the bulb to grow roots . Has anyone tried to raise a mount amaryllis after flowering ? Any success ?
