A Sure Sign of Fall—Black Spot on Your Roses

It’s just Mother Nature doing her thing

There are several signs of fall I can calculate on year in and twelvemonth out . The sky turns bluer , the leaves start to switch , and the numbers of interrogative I get about black touch start to rise !

Fall seems to bring on black office in most role of the country . That makes sense if you think about it . The nights are cool . Dew and damp are the usual forenoon conditions . The roses are set about to shut down , so they are not put as much energy into crusade off disease . I suspect they figure their leaves will drop off and someone will just pick them up for them — kind of like a teenager ’s method acting of changing clothes before a Saturday nighttime particular date .

So what should you do about this sudden outbreak ? Should you panic ? Bring out the destructive chemicals you ’ve had hidden under the floorboards of the potting shed ? Strip the leafage one by one and sanitize your hands between each leafage ?

My advice is to do . . . nothing .

Seriously — nothing . shine and blush wine go together like well , spring and hoi polloi of blooms . Every twelvemonth in my garden the rose that get absolutely no disease during the total year cease up with some black spot in fall . There is little I can do to prevent it . Even increase spray may keep it at embayment for a short while , but not by much .

So if you ’ve been trying to press fall mordant spot without success , rest assured that it ’s not you . Rather , it ’s Mother Nature , and essay to fight her is a battle we will miss every meter .

For now , just let the leaves get the black post . In a myopic while they will fall off , and then we ’ll start talk about some wintertime chores we can do to clean not only them but also any linger black - spot spore .
