Launch Gallery

Pineapple guavas(Feijoa sellowianaorAcca sellowiana ) are unsung heroes as far as I ’m concerned . For the life of me , I have n’t been able to figure out why this plant life is so underutilized — especially foredible landscape gardening .

I ’ve become its number - one lover , particularly because our house sits smack pat in the eye of some major cervid nation . All voluptuous plants eventually fall victim to these otherwise - endearing eating machines . OK , that ’s dramatic . possibly notallplants are raven ; just the ones thatI genuinely wantin my yard and garden .

With the exclusion of all but thetoughest plants , most have to be protected behind fences that are 6 feet tall or taller . My braw Ananas comosus guavas are one of the exceptions . They abide proud and challenging right in the face of a bazillion mule cervid .

And they ’re promptly disregard . Blessed are the pineapple guava bush .

Let it be known that they ’re anything but a one - john shot glass . away fromthe fact that deer ignore them , let me give you other great reason to plant some of your own .

1. Interesting and attractive foliage

Pineapple Psidium littorale is a well-favored shrub with thick , oval , silvery - fleeceable foliage . I should have mentioned right up front that these bad boys areevergreen . This is extremely important to someone who like some grain and color year - round ( namely , me ) . There ’s nothing wimpy going on here . It ’s a solid plant life that can be pruned into tree diagram phase or double as a boundary hedge .

2. Beautiful (and interesting) flowers

In the spring the flowers get in and put on a pretty fabulous show . The warmth - floweresque blossoms are some of the most interesting I ’ve seen . Sugary pinkish petals are displume back and down over the fore , allowing grow red stamens with gilded baksheesh to fan out . I ’m not alone on this ; bee , butterfly stroke , and wench appreciate them as much as I do .

3. Edible fruit (and flowers!)

Yes , those fabulous flowers are wholly comestible . you may eat them right off the plant life , thrash them into a salad ( imaginethatpresentation ) , add them to iced tea , or apply them to make jelly . They have a fruity - sweet - with - a - fiddling - tang nip . The fruit will show up in the fall and is right when they cast off off of the shrub .

It ’s a simple labor to cut the little fruits in one-half and scoop out the sarcoid interior with a spoonful . I think they have their own flavor , but I ’ve discover it account as ananas - ish , minty - ish , or . . . like a guava .

4. Carefree

This is one unfussy plant . Still , it has its penchant . Pineapple guava does well in Zones 8–11 . It enjoys full sun , but if you ’re in an area that has highly hot summer , afternoon shade is necessary .

Once institute , these plants are quite drouth patient of , but you ’ll have good yield if you give them a deep watering weekly . They ’re self - fruitful , but yield tends to set better if there ’s another industrial plant nearby . For the most part , pests seem to ignore them as much as the deer . ( Can this get any better ? )

5. Container friendly

That ’s right , these guys have no job survive in containers , so a small - outer space garden is a nonissue . In fact , even if you have plenty of horticulture infinite , if you hold out in a insensate zone ( where they wo n’t winter over ) , you may prefer to plant yours in a container so it can be brought indoors during the cold calendar month .

6. Did I mention that this plant is deer resistant?
